Portopalo

EASTER - HOLY WEEK:
The traditions regarding Portopalese Easter are truly unique in all of Sicily. On Good Friday, after the procession that retraces the stages of the Via Crucis, a group of singers intones the "Lamento", that is the story of the Crucifixion sung and recited strictly in Sicilian dialect.
On Easter Sunday, exactly at noon, there is "A Paci" ("Peace"), which represents the encounter between the Risen Christ and Our Lady.

PORTOPALESE SUMMER:
It includes a series of folkloristic events, musical and theatrical entertainment, exhibitions, etc.
The event, a fixed appointment for tourists and citizens of Portopalo, takes place in the months of July / August.

FISH FESTIVAL:
As part of the Week of the Sea, the Fish Festival represents the event that attracts the greatest influx of tourists to Portopalo. In fact, thousands of people come every year to taste the seafood specialties of Portopalo di Capo Passero. The Fish Festival is the true prototype of the village festival: good food, wine, music, dancing and, at the end, spectacular fireworks.

PALIO DEL MARE AND CUCCAGNA A MARE:
The Palio del Mare, formerly called "cursa re varchi" ("boat race"), is a regatta dedicated to San Gaetano, patron saint of Portopalo di Capo Passero, and represents the most ancient and consolidated historical tradition of the summer portopalese The Palio takes place every year in August in the wonderful natural scenery made up of that stretch of sea that separates Scalo Mandrie from the island of Capo Passero. The charm of the race has remained unchanged over time and at each edition attracts thousands of people including tourists, villagers and people from neighboring countries.

Pachino

THE INVERDURATA:
The Inverdurata, a competition with prizes for vegetable mosaics, was founded in 2004 on the initiative of APAC, the Pachinese Anticrime Association, founded in 1992 and member of the FAI, the Italian Antiracket Federation. The main purpose of the event is to get the message of legality, in its many aspects, to as many people as possible through a particular and driving event. Being Pachino an essentially agricultural town, the idea of producing artistic mosaics with local products (fruit and vegetables) led the population to approach APAC and to reflect on the theme proposed by the organizers. In 2004, 9 mosaics were produced, 4 of which were out of competition due to lack of adhesions. Theme of the first edition: "Legality and Illegality". The success of the first edition fostered the credibility of the initiative. In fact, from 2005, the sketches arrived increased and two roads had to be covered instead of one. From the first event a call was born to involve all schools, associations, individuals and groups. The mosaics remain on display for three days (Saturday to Monday), but the most beautiful and exciting time is undoubtedly Friday night, when the mosaics are created. In via Roma there are not only dozens of authors and performers of the artistic works, but relatives, friends, onlookers flock to them. It is a harmonious shouting that reflects the tired but joyful smiles not only of the citizens present but also of those who are working and slowly see his drawing realized in a colorful painting of vegetables, fruit and peat. From the second year, the regulation provides for the choice of 16 sketches from all those in competition. In addition to these, there are usually two other mosaics out of competition, one dedicated to the Municipality and the other to the organizing body. The sketches are chosen on the basis of their relevance to the proposed theme (which changes every year), their feasibility, their artistic beauty, their originality. Since 2004, the Inverdurata has been held in May because the event was dedicated to the victims of the mafia, in memory of the Capaci massacre, where judge Giovanni Falcone, his wife Francesca Morvillo and three escort agents lost their lives.

FEAST OF SAN CORRADO:
Among the most beautiful Sicilian festivals there is certainly that of San Corrado patron and protector of the baroque town of Noto (Sr), whose procession takes place every year twice (four considering the octaves) on the 19th of February and on the last Sunday in August, which commemorates the beatification of the saint on 28 August 1515. Corrado Confalonieri was a knight from Piacenza, "saved from the fire by the hand of God", who decided to become a hermit in Sicily.
The rider from Piacenza must have had a nice character: when he arrived in Noto he chose a cave, the one called "dei Pizzoni", to live there. But since she was small, according to legend, he spread her shoulder to shoulder. He performed numerous miracles and when he died, on February 19, 1351, it is said that the bells of the city began to ring by themselves. The sanctuary known as San Corrado "di fuora" was then erected near the cave. And here, since 1851, the silver urn containing the wooden case with the relics of the Saint is kept throughout the year.

Summer celebrations - last Sunday of August
Close to the celebrations in honor of San Corrado, in the Cathedral packed with devotees, the urn of the saint is moved from the place where it is kept and displayed in order to be visible to all the faithful. The urn, containing the mortal remains of the saint who came from Piacenza, once unveiled is moved from the side chapel to the main altar where it will remain on display until the end of the celebrations, scheduled for the following Sunday with the procession of the solemn octave. The faithful bearers of San Corrado and the bearers of the cilii (evolution of a large candle) carry and escort the urn in the short internal tour of the Cathedral among the stalls of the faithful. The main festival is scheduled for the last Sunday of August. The journey dedicated to the procession of the Octave, when the urn of San Corrado runs through the streets of the upper floor of the city, touches the churches of the Crucifix and the Sacred Heart.

The following Monday, the party moves to Lido di Noto with events, musical performances and the inevitable (very spectacular) fireworks at the end of the evening.
